Preface
‘’The world is becoming a global village’’
The world and societies are changing. Because of increasing transport- and communication technology, new scientific insights and the economic crisis humans are connected worldwide. These changes require new points of view. And who could better come up with this than you?
The Carmel College's vision, "a particular but normal school." This means the school wants to train and educate you to become responsible global citizens. And also to citizens who contribute in a creative, critical and meaningful way to the society of which you are part. To be a global citizen, you will need to dare to explore your limits. This means learning to accept other people's boundaries, knowing your own limits and sometimes also cross your own boundaries and take the responsibility for it. And of course, with this Comenius project you will also literally are going to cross borders!
Welcome! As a participant in this two-year Comenius project with the theme 'Sustainability'

1. The Comenius project
During this two-year Comenius project you will be working on a (local) sustainability problem, and ask attention for this on an European / Global scale
There are two major goals:
1. Learn about sustainability issues
2. Make a change!
The project is based on a partnership with seven European schools: Spain & Portugal (coordinating country), Slovenia, France (Reunion), Turkey, Denmark and the Netherlands. Three times a year an exchange will take place. During this exchange only a selected number of students from each country will be selected(four students each time). Additionally you will keep in contact with the schools the whole year through a website and e-twinning. In short, you are not only concerned with the issue of sustainability, but will also learn a lot and come into contact with new cultures within Europe. So, you will learn to work with people from other cultures, become more aware of your own culture and you will rethink your own values and standards.
2. Schedule
In the diagram below you can find the schedule for the first period (up to the first exchange). After each exchange a new part of the schedule will be added.

2.1 Explanation for each part (2013)
Part 1; Today the Comenius Project starts. You have received the information guide containing everything that is essential for the start of the project.
Part 2; Teamwork. After the start of the project, mixed groups of 4 persons will be formed. Each group gets a buddy in the form of a supervisor. This teacher can help you during the project if you get stuck or to make arrangements with. The ultimate goal is to do research on a topic having to do with ‘sustainability'. As you can read in chapter 3.1, sustainability is very broad topic. For this reason, it is especially important to brainstorm. Once a topic is defined as a group you have to make concrete what you want to do / want to achieve with the topic. Next to that a logo has to be designed for the Comenius project as a whole. In chapter 3.2 you can find tips for designing a professional logo
Part 3; Presentation sustainability topic. Today (October 31, 2013) each group will present their research on a sustainability topic.. This can take the form of a PowerPoint / Poster / Information Brochure. In short, in a style that suits your sustainability topic. Plus you'll also present the designed logo.
Part 4; Announcement of the winner. After all groups have presented their sustainability issue and logo, the jury will deliberate which subject wins. We will continue working on this subject as a class. The other researches on sustainability do not play a role anymore. The team of the winning topic will go on the first exchange to Portugal and is going to present the sustainability issue and the logo in Portugal.
Part 5; Perfecting research issue on sustainability and logo. The entire class supports the winning group, so that they can present our class in Portugal in the best way possible.
Part 6; Comenius project Portugal. The winning group will represent our school (Netherlands) during the first meeting in Portugal in the week of the 15th to 19th January.
3. Information about the first assignment
3.1 Research on a sustainability topic
The phrase 'sustainability' is everywhere. It is used for many purposes, but the description is often unclear. Sustainability means that the generation after you will still be able to use things the same way as you can now. In short, it is not affected, exhausted, destroyed or perhaps even gone.
It is up to you to choose a sustainability issue, and to ask attention for this subject on an European / Global level. So, 'think global, act local'.

Below you can find some interesting images to brainstorm on.
After you have chosen a subject you have to find as much as possible information about this subject. Think of general information, figures, government policy, European policy, etc.. Next to that it is up to you and your team to convince the jury why this subject has to be chosen. So do not only do research on general information ,but also on the relevance of the subject on a local and global level.
3.2 Tips for designing logo
The Comenius project also needs a logo. Each team will design a logo for the Comenius project in general. Only question is, what makes your logo a good logo? Here are some tips.
1. Functionality. Tune your logo on your target audience and on the content. A good logo ensures recognition and an own identity. Think of why for sustainability issues the colour green is almost always used.
2. Originality. Make sure your logo is not exactly the same as an existing logo. You can of course use an example picture / image as a starting point for your logo.
3. Creativity. Come up with new ideas.
4. Repetition. Show your logo everywhere, so that it becomes part of your corporate identity. A corporate identity is more than the logo.
Suppose you want somebody to make a software application for your business and you are looking for a company to which you want give this assignment. In the newspaper of the Chamber of Commerce there is an advertisement of the company Brickx. The company could use both logos below.

Which one would you choose?
Considerations;
- Font
- Use of colour
- Idea / Background
- Appearance (modern, young, contemporary, creative, amateurish)
- Technique (what program the logo designed)
- Positioning (the letters clamp or free, coherence between the word and the spelling of the letters)
Make sure that if you have designed a logo, that the element performs consistently in all your communications. In short, people need to start recognising you. Logo repetition creates familiarity. For example, the logo of the company Brickx has the following logo.
